First In The Fight

2018

Commissioned for Northern Art Carbooty, First In The Fight, saw the comeback of my tattoo dispenser The Tattooed Lady with a brand new temporary tattoo design to celebrate the centenary of women getting the right to vote in the UK

This was an especial project close to my heart and I am very proud of Manchester's history being the birth place of Suffrage. I wanted to reflect this and the amazing strength of the women who fought to win the vote in the tattoo design.

Here my suffragette stands in front of Manchester's iconic chimneys wearing her hat with its green white and purple ribbon symbolising the movement; purple for loyalty and dignity, white for purity, and green for hope. The white roses stand for the white that suffragettes wore on their protests and also more recently recalls the white roses worn by celebrities to support the #timesup and #metoo movements

On the day of Northern Art Carbooty I accompanied The Tattooed Lady dressed as a Manchester Suffragette to help distribute the temporary tattoos

The tattoos applied to some of the guests at the event. It was great to share the history and ideas with so many people!
